Few words on the upcoming parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan

Below is an excerpt from an article I wrote recently for Osservatorio Balcai e Caucaso on parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan that are scheduled to take place tomorrow, November 7 2010:
"These are Azerbaijan's fourth parliamentary elections since the demise of the Soviet Union and claims from local authorities that they will comply fully with democratic principles have attracted international attention. The country will vote for new members of the 125-seat parliament for its next five-year term under a majoritarian election system with only one round of voting.
Since the contested parliamentary elections of 2005, this is the first time that all major opposition forces take part in the elections (the results of the 2005 parliamentary elections were dismissed by some of the local opposition parties and subsequent elections were boycotted)."
